Homemade Shamrock Shake (Vegan)

Today, you will learn how to make a homemade Shamrock Shake (vegan) and healthy! This recipe only contains 6 ingredients that are all plant based including superfoods!

  • Frozen Bananas
  • Fresh Avocado
  • Mint Leaves
  • Dates
  • Nut Milk
  • Maca Powder

Nut Milk Choices: I used Almond Breeze Coconut & Almond Blend (which was super yummy with this recipe), you can also use plain almond milk or a vanilla flavor. If you want to stick to SUPER wholesome ingredients, you can try out my recipes for Homemade Almond Milk!

About the Superfood: Maca Powder

Maca is a potent, ancient Peruvian superfood used by indigenous Andean societies as a source of nourishment and healing for thousands of years. Unique alkaloids found in maca, called Macainas, have been shown to nourish and support the endocrine system. Maca also provides an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and sterols.

Maca powder is also known to help you out during stressful times! March starts to get a little crazy with spring arriving and the weather giving us more to do. If you feel too busy or stressed add some Maca to your daily smoothie and you’ll feel the brain boosting benefits!

Why Use Avocado in a Smoothie/Shake?

Avocados are an awesome addition in smoothies because not only are they packed with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats (awesome for young children needed to gain some weight), but also because they completely add something new to the texture. When you add 1/2 or even just 1/4 of an avocado to your smoothie, the result is something so creamy and delicious you’ll think it’s made with real cream!

The tip I have when choosing an avocado is that you need to make sure it’s not ever too ripe. Find one that is just starting to show signs of ripeness. If you use an avocado that’s too ripe, your smoothie will start to turn brown very quickly after it leaves your blender. While this is just science – the avocado is oxidizing – it can be unsettling for others! Even just a little squeeze of lime is a good choice, but totally optional.

Superfood Shamrock Shake

  • Yield: 1-2 servings
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup nut milk
  • 1 tsp Maca Powder
  • 2 ripe frozen bananas
  • 1/2 fresh avocado
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 5 medjool dates (or maple syrup to sweeten)
  • 1/4 tsp peppermint extract (adds flavor, optional)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients into your blender in the order above. Blend until smoothie and serve with Cacao Nibs* if desired!

Notes

*Cacao Nibs are another superfood that can be found at Navitas Organics!
