Vegan Jalapeño Poppers

What makes these Vegan?

Usually jalapeño poppers are made with cream cheese, tons of shredded cheese and sometimes even butter or animal fat. THESE are made with Daiya Original Cream Cheese, Daiya Cheddar Shreds and light cooking oil spray.

It’s no secret that dairy is no good for your body. Like I rave about in so many other posts, “that plant based life is trending!” Which means that more and more people are looking for different ways to indulge in dairy-ish foods.

I am personally a huge advocate for the whole foods approach to a plant based diet. Staying away from processed foods is always best for our bodies and will lead to ALL the health benefits of a plant base diet.

With that said, it’s still okay to treat yourself with some old favorites! Daiya makes this easy for us with their cheese products derived from coconut.

If you have the time, try out this recipe using the homemade cream cheese from this post! It’ll end up being a slightly different texture and flavor, but still amazeballs!

What the secret?

I always love wowing my friends and family with new vegan appetizers, especially during the fall and winter holidays. I tried a few different things to get these jalapeño poppers to get these to come out perfectly. There are 3 secrets to this recipe that I want to clue you in on…

  1. The Daiya cream cheese melts quite easily. Mixing the cream cheese with the cheesy shreds fixes this! It turns out so creamy and delicious!
  2. Those bacon bits you see? They are actually chopped dates! Dates are the perfect sweet addition to make these poppers effortlessly addictive. They even become slightly crunchy when broiled in the oven.
  3. Finally, the smashed tortilla chips on top! These are SO much better than using bread crumbs. They are salty and pair perfectly with the spice of the jalapeños.

If you have any secret additions to your baked jalapeño poppers please leave them in a comment on this post!

Prep: Cook: Yield: Makes 12-16 poppersTotal:

Blow your friends and family away with a vegan jalapeño poppers (with a twist!)

You'll Need...

  • 6-8 Jalapeños
  • 1/2 container of Daiya Original Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup of Daiya Cheddar Shreds
  • 2 chopped Medjool Dates, pitted
  • A handful of Tortilla Chips

Directions

  1. Wash and dry the jalapeños, slice in half the long way & scoop out/discard the seeds.
  2. Place the jalapeños on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (parchment paper is VERY important) skins out and broil on high (450-500ºF) for 5 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl combine the cream cheese and cheddar shreds.
  4. Chop the dates making sure to remove any pits. Add 2/3 of the chopped dates to the cheese blend.
  5. Remove the jalapeños from the oven, turn them over and carefully stuff them with the cheese blend - you may have leftover cheese depending of the size of the jalapeños.
  6. Add a couple extra shreds of cheese to each popper (2-3 shreds per popper).
  7. Evenly distribute the remaining chopped dates to the top of the poppers. Press them down slightly so they stick.
  8. Crush some tortilla chips (using a zip lock bag works best) and sprinkle/press them on the poppers.
  9. Broil on high (still using parchment paper) for 8-10 minutes or until the cheese is melty and edges start to brown.
  10. Remove the poppers from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes before enjoying! They will be HOT!

Additional Notes

Daiya products can be found at any health food store and the cheddar shreds can even be found at Target! Note that broil time may vary per oven.
