Let’s get grillin’!! Who said that vegans can’t enjoy a good grilling season? There are so many veggies or meat alternatives you can throw on the grill that make for a great BBQ.

I did a roundup post a while back including a bunch of vegan recipes that are perfect for the grill. Check it out right here! (updated: September 2018)

Why Choose Carrot Dogs?

Carrot Dogs are all the craze right now in the plant based world, and for good reason! We all know that carrots are healthy for us, but let’s compare then to the leading veggie dogs!

CARROT DOG INGREDIENTS: CARROTS

…compared to…

VEGAN HOT DOG INGREDIENTS: WATER, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SOYBEAN OIL, EVAPORATED CANE SYRUP, PEA PROTEIN ISOLATE, TAPIOCA STARCH, SALT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, BAKERS YEAST EXTRACT, CARRAGEENAN, DRIED GARLIC, NATURAL FLAVOR (FROM PLANT SOURCES), NATURAL SMOKE FLAVOR, XANTHAN GUM, FERMENTED RICE FLOUR, GUAR GUM, OLEORESIN PAPRIKA (COLOR).

I think you get the picture… Let’s check out a little more about how amazing carrots are, shall we?

Carrots are filled with nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin K1, vitamin B6, antioxidants, biotin, potassium, and fiber. Eating more carrots can help reduce your risk of cancer and lower your cholesterol; they are also great for eye health, and weight loss.

I think we have a winner! Processed vegan food is always a better choice for your health, the environment, and the animals than the alternative. But when you can opt for a whole foods based option, you are making even more of a difference! 🙂

Grilling Carrots

Grilling carrots is much different that just throwing them on the grill. It’s a two step process. But don’t worry is super simple!

Step 1: Prep and soak the carrots

This step is very important. Soaking the carrots will soften them so that they will cook more evenly. In this recipe I recommend soaking the carrots in a marinade (see below for details). This will give them an amazing flavor!

Marinade Recipe:

  1. 1/3 cup Coconut Aminos (or Soy Sauce)
  2. 1/3 cup Lemon Juice
  3. 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  4. 1 Tbsp Maple Syrup
  5. 1 tsp Liquid Smoke

Step 2: Grill the carrots

Fire up the grill on medium-high. Grill the carrots for about 10 minutes total turning 2 to 3 times. Then choose your fav toppings and enjoy!

Prep: Cook: Yield: 6-8 carrot dogsTotal:

Health is wealth! Turn this summer staple into a healthy meal!

You'll Need...

  • 6-8 Sprouted Grain Hot Dog Buns
  • 6-8 Large Carrots
  • 1/3 cup Coconut Aminos (or Soy Sauce)
  • 1/3 cup Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 1 tsp Liquid Smoke
  • Toppings of Choice

Directions

  1. Wash and cut the carrots to your desired length. I recommend to cut them so they are slightly longer than the buns you selected.
  2. Peel the carrots so they are smooth and round the edges to give them that "hot dog look"
  3. Whisk together the marinade: coconut aminos, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, liquid smoke in a glass container that will hold all the carrots. If you need more marinade to cover the carrots, you can add a little more of each ingredient or even just add some water.
  4. Soak the carrots in the marinade for 12 hours or overnight. This step is very important to make sure they soften up a little before grilling.
  5. When you are ready to grill turn the grill on medium-high and allow for it to heat up. Remove the carrots from the marinade (you can store it in the for later use!) and brush them with a little olive oil to make sure they don't stick to the grill.
  6. Grill them for 10-12 minutes total turning 2-3 times. Cooking time may be different on each grill since they are all different, but they will be done with the carrots are slightly charred and tender.
  7. Remove them from the grill and add your desired toppings of choice!!
