Welcome to the Educating Bloggers Series!
In this little corner of my blog, I will help you learn the simple steps to starting your very own food blog (or any other kind of blog)! Included will be weekly posts with new tips and ideas of how to get your blog started from the ground up!
This series will show you all you need to know about creating your own blog! It’s going to be long and a little tricky, but totally worth it in the end! If you follow these simple steps and guidelines, you will be on your way to a successful blog and the beginning of a second income (or with a lot of dedication and effort, your main income)!
As I develop my own food blog and learn more helpful tricks along my blogging journey, I will keep posting and updating my ideas and progress! I know that at first, blogging isn’t going to be a full time job. You are going to need at least a year of hard work and dedication in order for your blog to start earning an income.
But once you finally start generating an income from your blog, you are going to be on your way to financial freedom and being your own boss! How awesome would it feel to wake up each morning and work from the comfort of your own home (even in your PJs if you want!) and create your own schedule and routines based on what works for you!
Okay, let’s get into the the first post in the series!
Step 1: Choose a Niche
This one should be easy peasy! What is your passion? Travel, food, self-help, fitness, fashion, beauty, spirituality, family, DIY, the list goes on! Choose something you are knowledgeable on, passionate about and that is a part of your daily life. For me it was living a well balanced plant-based lifestyle.
Write it down!! Whether it’s in a brand new notebook that you bought just for business / blogging things, or it’s just pulled up on your computer as a word document. Write down your ideas and compare them to other websites or blogs on the internet.
Pro Tip: Quick head over to gmail and create a new email address that will only be for blogging things. This will be so much easier when signing up for all the other accounts that come along with blogging. You can always change your email later, but it’s just easier to start with your blog email right away.
Step 2: Name Your Business & Claim Your Domain Name!
This is probably the most stressful part of the whole thing!! This name will most likely be your domain name as well, and once you pay for that, there’s no turning back! Try to create a name that is unique to your business and is able to say what you’re all about.
Where to buy your domain name: Basically all you need to do is use a web hosting company that you like. I use started with Bluehost since they are the most compatible with WordPress and are very user friendly. Hostgator is another amazing hosting site that is well priced and very similar to Bluehost. Click around and see which host you like best!
Once you have your domain name and hosting all set up, you can continue on to the wordpress.org site and get started with the design and all that fun stuff!
Step 3: Set up Hosting with WordPress
Make sure to bundle and save if you can! Bluehost offers deals where when you host your site through them, you are able to claim your domain name for free! Make sure to take advantage of this!
There are a few different packages when signing up for web hosting. If you are just starting out stick with the basic package. You won’t need anything special right now, and can always upgrade when you need to; like when you go viral and start getting TONS of traffic to your site.
Once you have your web hosting all set up (it’s pretty simple and your provider will walk you right through it process)!
Step 4: Access your Blog through Wordpress.org
Bluehost will walk you through a step by step process of how to get your website up and running! Make sure before you hit “go live” you check out step 5 below!
After you’re all set up you can check out some different themes that will give you more options when you are designing your site. Think about if you want to sell anything on your site like eBooks or physical items; then you’ll want to make sure you get an eCommerce friendly theme.

Step 5: Start Writing Awesome Content
Before you actually launch your blog, you should have some posts (I would recommend 10-20 posts) already written and categorized for your readers to actually read something! This is something that I wish I would have done before I launched my blog.
Create categories for your recipe or lifestyle posts. Keep in mind that if you are a food blog, people are most likely coming to your site to find a new recipe. Make sure that your recipes are categorized in a way that will make it easy for your readers to find what they are looking for.
Take your time writing your awesome content to have ready for your readers. This piece is very important. Next week I will be talking about what to write for these posts and other things you need to have set up before you launch.
