Welcome to the Educating Bloggers Series!
In this little corner of my blog, I will help you learn the simple steps to starting your very own food blog (or any other kind of blog)! Included will be weekly posts with new tips and ideas of how to get your blog started from the ground up!
This series will show you all you need to know about creating your own blog! It’s going to be long and a little tricky, but totally worth it in the end! If you follow these simple steps and guidelines, you will be on your way to a successful blog and the beginning of a second income (or with a lot of dedication and effort, your main income)!
As I develop my own food blog and learn more helpful tricks along my blogging journey, I will keep posting and updating my ideas and progress! I know that at first, blogging isn’t going to be a full time job. You are going to need at least a year of hard work and dedication in order for your blog to start earning an income.
But once you finally start generating an income from your blog, you are going to be on your way to financial freedom and being your own boss! How awesome would it feel to wake up each morning and work from the comfort of your own home (even in your PJs if you want!) and create your own schedule and routines based on what works for you!
Okay, let’s get into the the first post in the series!
Step 1: Choose a Niche
This one should be easy peasy! What is your passion? Travel, food, fitness, fashion, beauty, sports, family, DIY, the list goes on! Remember, there are tons of micro topics in the category of food as well. Choose something you are knowledgeable on, passionate about and that is a part of your daily life. For me it was plant based health & fitness.
Write it down!! Whether it’s in a brand new notebook that you bought just for blogging things, or it’s just pulled up on your computer as a word document. Write down your ideas and compare them to other websites or blogs on the internet.
Step 2: Name Your Business & Claim Your Domain Name!
This is probably the most stressful part of the whole thing!! This name will most likely be your domain name as well, and once you pay for that, there’s no turning back! Try to create a name that is unique to your business and still is able to slightly say what you’re all about.
Where to buy your domain name: Basically all you need to do is use your web hosting company. That you like. I use Hostgator since they had the best deal at the time that I signed up, and I can’t say enough good things about them! Bluehost is another amazing hosting site that is very user friendly and priced the same as Hostgator. Click around and see which host you like best!
Once you have your domain name and hosting all set up, you can continue on to the wordpress
Step 3: Set up Hosting with WordPress
Make sure to bundle and save if you can! Hostgator and bluehost both offer deals where when you host your site through them, you are able to claim your domain name for free! Make sure to take advantage of this!
There are different packages when signing up for web hosting. If you are just starting out, you won’t need anything special (for Hostgator it’s called the hatchling package). It’s only when you start getting tons, like TONS of traffic to your site that you might have to think about upgrading.
Hostgator and Bluehost packages range from $3 to $4 per month and you can save more money when you pay for the full year (or more) in advance, YAY! If that’s not motivation to give it at least a year’s worth of effort, I don’t know what is!
Once you have your web hosting all set up (it’s pretty simple and your provider will walk you right through it process), then you’ll have to head over to WordPress.org (not .com – this will not give you the option to use that brand new domain name you snagged).

Step 4: Access your Blog through Wordpress.org
Now that you have your web address all ready to go, you’ll need to head over to WordPress.org to start designing your blog. First you need to download wordpress to your computer.
Head over to WordPress.org/download and follow the steps to download what you need!
After you downloaded the .zip file, double click in it to expand and find the document that says: readme.html. When you open that, it will take you to a link that has everything you need to setup wordpress on your computer.
Here’s what the instruction page looks like (as of March 2017)
Pro Tip: Quick head over to gmail and create a new email address that will only be for blogging things. This will be so much easier when signing up for all the other accounts that come along with blogging. You can always change your email later, but it’s just easier to start with your blog email right away.
Step 5: Choose a (starter) Template
There are so many awesome sites to find a template on! Tons of people are so talented at creating these beautiful looking website designs that you can download and use for your blog. Don’t spend too long looking for a template. This can be hard because if you’re anything like me, you might find yourself spending hours or even DAYS finding your “perfect” template. Just don’t stress about it right now! Focus on the next step of creating awesome content before you launch your brand new blog.
Here are my fav places to search for website templates:
Step 6: Start Writing Awesome Content
Before you actually launch your blog, you should have some posts (I would recommend 10-20 posts) already written and categorized for your readers to actually read something! This is something that I wish I would have done before I launched my blog. It started out with nothing! No content which meant nothing for my readers to read.
Create categories for your recipe posts and lifestyle posts. Keep in mind that if you are a food blog, people are most likely coming to your site to find a new recipe. Make sure that your recipes are categorized in a way that will make it easy for your readers to find what they are looking for.
Take your time writing your awesome content to have ready for your readers. This piece is very important. Next week I will be talking about what to write for these posts and other things you need to have set up before you launch.
