If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, then you know that I am a strong believer that every person has different needs according to their own body. Some people can run off of 4 hours of sleep and some need more like 10 hours! Some people need more protein or fats in their diet than others.
It’s your job to get to know your body and how it functions best. The best way to find out more about your body is to try new things! I was nervous about cutting animal products out of my diet since I am big into the weights; but I soon found out that I was actually lifting heavier and recovering faster by consuming plant based foods!
One thing that I make sure to do on lifting days is to supplement my protein. On a day when I don’t use a protein supplement I still hit about 50-60 grams of protein which is plenty for my body size. But when I lift weights or do a higher impact workout, I have noticed that I my muscles really like when I fuel up with a protein shake!
Top Quality Brands
I’ve tried a few different brands including Orgain and Betterbody Foods and will still order them on occasion when they are having a discount because they are great brands; but, I have absolutely fallen in love with Vega Products!
First of all, I want to point out that all the products they offer are 100% plant based and vegan friendly. They have a huge free recipe library that I reference to all the time. AND They will give you $15 towards your first purchase when you sign up for a new account! This $15 will only work through my link, and you can always sign up now and save the $15 for when you’re ready to order.
Vega’s protein shakes are amazing just by themselves, blended into a smoothie or shake, and mixed in with some baked goods! Here’s the truth behind these supplements and what makes each of them unique.
30g Protein | 6g BCAAs | 1 billion probiotics | high in iron & calcium
Vega Sport Performance Protein is probably my favorite “post-workout” protein. It’s the best re-fuel due to the Branch Chain Amino Acids, which aid in muscle retention and fat burning after you’ve finished your workout, and the high protein content. The Glutamine is great for recovery and immunity. 30 grams of protein will keep your going for a few hours and the fats in the mix will help keep you full.
Flavors: chocolate, vanilla, berry, and mocha. I personally love the chocolate flavor the best, berry is okay but definitely better blended in smoothies. Vanilla and Mocha are good too, but personally I’m a huge fan of chocolate. Check out the sample packs to find which flavor you prefer!
25g Protein | 4g BCAAs | Only 130 Calories
Vega Clean Protein is a simple and powerful protein source that has a super smooth texture compared to other plant protein powders out there. This is my fav “shake-and-go” protein on days when I’m just too busy to plan out my meals or when I’m traveling and don’t need the extra “fluff” of the sport protein. It’s also just a little less $$ than the sport protein, however you do get 4 less servings.
Flavors: chocolate and vanilla. There are only 2 flavor selections for the Clean Protein, but still I have to say that the chocolate flavor is the best of the two! Also, that’s just my opinion 🙂
Vega’s nutrition shakes are packed with nutrients and taste best when blended into a smoothie or shake and mixed in with some baked goods! Here’s the truth behind these supplements and what makes each of them unique.
20g Protein | Veggies & Greens | 1 billion probiotics | Omega-3s | Fiber
Vega One is packed with so much amazing ingredients that you really can’t find all in one place anywhere else. The only about Vega One is that it’s really grainy and not good just mixed with water. You definitely need to have time to blend this one up in a smoothie. Another great way to use Vega One is to mix in with some homemade bars! Check this recipe for my current fav bar recipe! The downside to this product is the cost. It’s definitely on the higher end of the scale and might not be worth it for some people.
Flavors: chocolate, vanilla chai, french vanilla, coconut almond, berry, mocha, and natural. So many flavors to choose from! I’ve only tried the chocolate flavor, which is super good in chocolate shakes: check this recipe. Try out the sample packs to see which you prefer!
20g Protein | veggies & greens
Vega Protein & Greens is very similar to Vega One in the sense that it’s definitely better when mixed with smoothies or bars. Check this recipe for my current fav bar recipe! It’s not as grainy and Vega One and still contains tons of micronutrients and greens and is definitely less expensive on the wallet.
Flavors: berry, chocolate, vanilla, tropical, natural, and coconut almond. I have only tried that vanilla and berry flavors and they are both awesome mixed with smoothies! Berry is my FAV!
Best Protein Shake: Vega Sport Protein
Best Nutrition Shake: Vega Protein & Greens
I currently am keeping Vega Sport Protein-Chocolate and Vega Protein & Greens-Berry on hand. The Sport Protein is the best overall value because it includes those extra BCAAs, Glutamine, and probiotics. Plus, it actually tastes good just mixed with some cold water and still has a great texture. The Protein & Greens is awesome mixed with smoothies, pancakes, and bars! It’s just what you need to give yourself a little extra protein and greens in your diet without costing you a fortune like the Vega One.
Easy for Traveling
Staying on the health train while traveling can be tricky, especially when you’re sticking to a plant based diet. The key is to be prepared and have some backup fuel just in case your plans fall through. Use the reviews above to plan out what you should take along with you!
Sometimes it’s hard to find places to eat that offer more than just rice, pasta or veggie wraps for vegans. So it’s great to bring along some fast and nutritious protein and micronutrients in shake form. For traveling the Clean Protein might be your best option due to the slightly lower price and the convenience of just mixing with water.
Pro tip: Use disposable baggies to portion your protein out in while traveling is so convenient! This way you don’t have to take the whole container and the scoop with you. Just make sure you are using water that is purified if you are traveling abroad.
